Trigger Diary

What can trigger a migraine?

Most migraine attacks occur for no apparent reason. However, there are a number of things that can trigger migraines in some people.

Foods like chocolate, cheese, red wine, citrus fruits, and foods containing tyramine are common culprits as is going on strict diets and losing weight too quickly.

There are a number of environmental triggers too. Smoking and smoky rooms, computer screens or flickering TVs, bright lights, loud noises, strong smells and hot weather can all bring on a migraine. And Depression, anxiety, anger, a change in sleep patterns or fatigue can all play a part. In some people migraines occur when relaxing after periods of stress and women often cite periods, the contraceptive pill, HRT or the menopause as possible triggers of their migraine attacks.

Migraine diary

Many people find that keeping a Migraine diary can help them recognise a pattern to their migraines. They can then avoid one or more things that may trigger their migraine attacks.

Some people need a combination of triggers to trigger a migraine. For example, some women may only get a migraine if they drink red wine and are having a period. Another example is that a food trigger may only trigger a migraine if you are also over-tired.

We've given you an example of a migraine diary below. You might find it useful to fill it in over 3-4 months so that you and your doctor can develop a better understanding of your migraines.
